Welcome
Hi, my name is Katie Fox. Thank you for visiting my website.
If you are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant, I can offer you calming and experienced support. I am a birth doula living in South West London (SW11), and I cover all of South and Central London.
I feel extremely privileged to be able to do this job, and I want to support you in having the birth you want, however that looks. Whether it's under the stars, or with all the drugs, and anything in between.
I am registered with Doula UK, Nurturing Birth, and Katharine Graves Hypnobirthing. Please do feel free to browse through my website. I have an abundance of information which I hope you will find useful and informative - I also have some great videos covering pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. Should you want some feedback, I have a lot of testimonials that you can read, which give a good indication of how I work.
Should you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can either use the contact form below, or you can call me on 07767345554 or email me katiefox007@icloud.com, whichever is most convenient for you..

About me

I live in South West London and have two children born in 1999 and 2001 (let’s not talk about the slamming doors)!
When giving birth to my two, I had all the drugs the first time round with my daughter, as it was a long labour and I admit I am a complete wuss when it comes to pain. I then had a natural birth with my son (too fast to get any drugs), and I am so pleased I did, as it was such an amazing and mind-blowing experience. I feel both of my births were very positive experiences.
I have always been fascinated with all things pregnancy and birth, so when I heard about birth doulas, that was it for me, and I have never looked back. I do feel incredibly privileged to be able to support Mothers (Fathers and birth partners) during this special time, and my aim is to help you have the birth that feels right for you.
I trained with Nurturing Birth in 2012 and am registered with Nurturing Birth and Doula UK. I have also taken the Katharine Graves Hypnobirthing training course, so I can support Mothers who have taken a Hypnobirthing course. For more details, please do look under ‘My Experience’. I have trained with Biomechanics for birth, so I understand the physiology of the pelvis and have techniques that can help before and during labour to ensure good positioning of the baby.
Lastly, when not working, I do love a good movie, a good book, a good laugh and anything chocolate related!
My philosophy

"Birth Your Baby Your Way"
I feel incredibly lucky being a birth doula as I think it is the best job in the world. I am extremely privileged to be able to support each labouring Mother, as she shows her incredible strength, courage and natural ability to birth. I get to see that special moment when a baby enters the world and the joy and emotion this brings to each Mother (and Father). I finally get to watch each Mother (and Father) during their first days/weeks with their new baby, and I love to watch how besotted they become with their new little person.
Whether this is your first or your fifth baby, I am here to support you, and I do not come with an agenda. I strongly believe that you have the choice to birth your baby in whichever way that looks like for you. You may want the whole natural birthing experience, whether that is at home, in a birth centre or labour ward. You may want to start in the birth centre, and 'see how you get on'. You may want to have the option for an epidural, and want to go down the labour ward route, and under certain circumstances, you may choose a caesarean. I aim to support you in whichever way feels right for you. This is the only opportunity you will have to `birth your baby, your way'. I will do everything I can to help this happen.
I strongly believe that all Mothers have the right instincts to know how to give birth and how to look after their babies. There will always be an abundance of well-meaning advice, from people, books, magazines, etc., on how to do this. Only you will know what resonates with you, and I want to help you achieve this.
Giving birth to your baby is one of the most wonderful, challenging, rewarding and life-changing experiences you will ever have, and memories of your labour will stay with you forever. This is why a positive birth experience is so important. I aim to help you feel confident, prepared, and supported before, during and after your birth.
My experience

I have been a Birth and Postnatal Doula with Doula UK since 2012 and have supported over 100 births.
-
I have supported home births, water births, natural births, inductions, ventouse, forceps births, hypno-births, epidurals & VBAC births. I supported the first VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Caesarean) water birth in the Birth Centre at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital which was pretty amazing.
-
I have also supported many births at private hospitals. The common misconception is that when going privately the care during your birth will be better, but the care during the birth is the same (you will get an epidural faster). The after care is better but I have seen births with similar issues whether NHS or private. They have the same protocols in place and I have seen similar issues regardless so it is still advisable to have a birth doula who is independent and not employed by the hospital.
-
I have supported Mothers in theatre who have had either planned or emergency caesareans. It is quite unusual for a Doula to experience this, as only one person is allowed to accompany the Mother in theatre, and usually it is the partner or family member. So, if your partner or family member is squeamish, or if you do not have a birth partner, you can be confident that I can be there for you.
-
I have supported Mothers who have had various medical conditions, and in these cases, I have communicated with the Consultant Midwife /Obstetrician when appropriate, and helped work with the hospital to get the right amount of support for the Mother.
-
I use biomechanics for birth. This is a knowledge of how the pelvis works, and looking for signs when labour may be prolonged. If it is taking a long time to progress, delay in dilating, or if labour stalls, and various signs that show the pelvis may be out of balance, which is quite common due to the ligaments softening during pregnancy. This can mean there is less room for the baby to get into a good position. Using simple and pain-free techniques to help re-align the pelvis, and helping the baby to get back into a good position, and so helping labour to progress, often quite quickly. This also helps to prevent medical interventions, often used in these examples.
-
I have over 12 years of experience to help you navigate the best outcomes for your labour/birth, and will help you contact the necessary medical staff to enable you to have the best birth choices.
I don't know if it's because my website looks more like a photography website than a doula site, but I seem to attract quite a lot of women who are control freaks (in the nicest possible way), who are usually used to being in careers where they are in charge and fully in control in their jobs. In this case pregnancy and birth can be triggering and so raise anxiety levels because you can often feel out of control of your body during pregnancy, and also birth can feel very unpredictable. If this is you, be reassured that I have a lot of experience and know how to help you manage this.
I have really good instincts and intuition, which is very helpful when supporting women as things are not always clear-cut, which can be really helpful when not medically trained. Having been to over 100 births, I have learnt an enormous amount about natural birth and the medical side and what procedures are necessary, and what are more 'protocol'. Sadly, nowadays maternity care is not individualised and has become more 'blanket' care, which means women often get the same recommendations regardless of their personal situation. Induction has become an issue with every mother (healthy pregnancy or otherwise) being pressured into induction. So I can help you navigate this and make sure that you are not receiving unnecessary interventions.
There are a lot of doulas out there now, especially in London. I feel experience counts for a lot. Some doulas will have all the knobs and whistles but lack experience. Experience means I have been in virtually every scenario you can think of during births and have learnt something from all of them. Experience means I won't be surprised by anything that happens, and I will know how to support you and navigate the situation. Costs for having a doula may seem a lot to some, but one way to look at it is that, if you are married or planning to be, then consider how much money is spent for that experience. Giving birth is an experience that will stay with you forever, and will have long lasting effects on both. You and your baby. So, a positive birth experience will also have a positive long term benefit for you and your baby.

Doula Services

Firstly, what exactly does a doula do? Let's start with the basics. As a doula, I provide educational, emotional and advocacy support. I am strictly non-medical. This means that whilst I am part of your birth team, I do not replace a Midwife or an Obstetrician. Whilst it varies from doula to doula, my doula package includes meeting 2-3 times for antenatal sessions (and a chance for us to get to know each other), being on-call 10 days before your due date (until you have had your baby), attending your birth, and then 1 postnatal debrief visit after your birth. Once you book me, I am available by phone, email, text or phone should you have any questions or need more information.
In the antenatal sessions leading up to the birth, I pretty much discuss everything, from what birth looks like, coping techniques, getting to know what your birthing preferences are, what to expect at the hospital (or at home if having a home birth), breastfeeding, and the postpartum period. A lot of what I cover, I have learnt from actually supporting births. A lot of antenatal teachers have been trained for their particular course, so they will not have this information.
I also practice Biomechanics, and I will give you some techniques (in our antenatal classes) to practice in the lead up to labour to help ensure your pelvis is in balance. Due to ligaments softening during pregnancy, the pelvis to be moved slightly out of alignment (just carrying your handbag on the same shoulder) or being very sporty can tighten ligaments, which may prevent natural movement of the pelvis during pregnancy. When this happens, it can mean that there is less room for the baby to get into a good position. It can delay engagement, and once in labour, it can delay progression (cervix to dilate), it can cause a long early labour (latent stage) and can stall labour once it has started. By practising these techniques during labour, it can often help to realign the pelvis and so give the baby enough room to get into a good position. Labour will progress, often quickly. By doing this, it will help to prevent medical interventions that would try to speed up labour (breaking waters, syntocinon drip, and even caesarean).
During your labour, I do everything from back rubs (I've been told I should get my hands insured!), to normalising the weird and scary stuff that can happen, and of course, making sure you are both fed and watered. I can also help facilitate conversations with your medical providers to ensure you are an active participant in your care, if this is what you want. I have supported clients with medical issues and have arranged meetings with Consultant Midwives, etc., to ensure you get the best support possible.
So, how do you know if you should work with a doula? Well, the truth is, everyone can benefit from having a doula. Whether you are birthing at home, at a Birth Centre, or Labour Ward, with an Obstetrician or Midwife, under the NHS or Private, the benefits are clear: The continuity of care and calming affect of a doula can help decrease your chance of a caesarean, the overall length of labour, the amount of syntocinon, and other medications you are recommended, all of which will help you to have positive feelings about your birth. You will always remember your birth, so I want to help ensure you have as many positive memories as possible.
So, how does it work if you have a partner who is also supporting you? I will never replace your partner. How could I? Your partner likely knows you better than anyone. I act as a facilitator and container, to allow your partner to best support you by taking some of the pressure off, helping to guide them, answering questions, and letting them rest, eat or take a bathroom break when needed. Because I am calm, it helps you and your partner to stay calm. If your partner is not very assertive, then I can take on this role, and if they are squeamish, I can make sure they are not overwhelmed by anything during labour and birth.
There are two main things I bring to the birth that your partner most likely cannot: experience and emotional detachment. And these make a big difference. Having a doula around to say "All this is normal" and Why don't you have a warm bath?" helps you to stay at home for as long as possible (which is advisable in all healthy, low-risk labours). Helping to translate your needs to professionals at the hospital can be extremely beneficial, too.
Your partner is going to be emotionally attached to all that is happening (rightfully so!), and so nerves, apprehensions, and their original birth preferences or ideals may cloud their ability to give 100% support. No amount of books can fully prepare you for the experience once you are in it, and so it helps to have someone you can bounce your thoughts off of and be reminded of the questions to ask your Midwife along the way. Also, your partner may not want to show you that they are struggling or feeling overwhelmed. I usually suggest they go out to get some fresh air/ food/ sleep so they can come back to the birthing room more able to support you.
I mostly work with local mothers as this enables me to be able to arrive at short notice if necessary (as births are so unpredictable), but also so I can just pop over for a cuppa if you need some reassurance, or a hug before or after the birth. I also have local knowledge of hospitals, lactation specialists, pregnancy yoga teachers, pregnancy masseurs, cranial osteopaths, chiropractors, reflexologists, acupuncturists, breastfeeding clinics, etc. Once I am on-call, I am yours 24/7, which means no drinking, partying, or late nights, and any family, social or school events are cancelled until you have had your baby. Not to mention being available by phone, text or email once I am booked. If you don't live locally but you are going to a local hospital too, I can still support you, but antenatal may be over Zoom, and I can meet you at the hospital once you are in labour.
My job as a birth doula is never to cause more tension but try to make it easier for everyone involved, including your midwife. I find that when working with a midwife, it becomes more about 'team work' and building a good rapport, which creates a lovely atmosphere in the room.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch (contact form below).
Testimonials

"The idea of hiring a doula came up at the end of my first trimester, as we knew several people who’d had very traumatic birth experiences. Already being an anxious person, working with a doula seemed like the obvious choice, and when we came across Katie, something clicked. She knew exactly how I needed to be supported. We really valued Katie’s guidance and input throughout the pregnancy - we wouldn’t have known about the birth centre option without her! When I went into spontaneous labour at 37w Katie was unflappable and met us at the hospital straight away - she was totally prepared to advocate for our wishes despite only having met once in person and everything going against our “plans”. Katie’s support and coaching allowed my husband to focus on me, and our son’s birth, which could easily have felt really scary, instead is an experience we feel really good about. We can’t recommend Katie enough!"

"We worked with Katie during the birth of our first child, and she was such a great support before and especially during labour and the birth itself. I was anxious about some things I’d heard about maternity services in London hospitals, and having read about doulas before my pregnancy thought it would be a great option for us. I had a phone call with Katie when I was around 5 months pregnant, and decided she would be a wonderful person to guide us through my pregnancy and advocate for us when needed. I had vague birth preferences, and having Katie available provided reassurance and gave my husband and I the confidence to make the right decisions for us. During the birth Katie provided invaluable guidance, and her prior experiences helped us navigate the NHS system. We would highly recommend Katie and couldn’t have imagined the process without her. Thanks, Katie!"
Katie - SE17

We were considering having a doula for a very long time, and we only started looking towards the end of the pregnancy. Given this was our second child, we didn’t have any support in London and NHS services were struggling, and we wanted to make sure we were prepared for the arrival of our baby girl. We really wanted to have a natural birth centre experience, and because of Katie, whom we connected with from the very first phone call, we were able to have just that. Katie kept us informed and calm throughout the whole preparation and on the day of the birth. Having her as our support was the best decision we could have made, and we are so grateful to her for helping us achieve the most magical birth we could have wished for. We would 100% recommend her to anyone who is expecting a baby and needs someone who can advocate for them and be there for them in every step of that wonderful journey. Thank you, Katie, for being part of our precious memory."
Gosia - SW11
"My partner and I are from Australia and don't have any family close by. So when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I knew immediately that I wanted to work with a doula. Throughout my pregnancy, Katie was a constant source of support. It was hugely reassuring knowing I could get advice from someone experienced, and I could avoid googling and getting overwhelmed with too much information. When it came to my actual labour, there were complications which meant that we had to depart from my original birth plan. Thankfully, Katie was by our side, supporting us every step of the way, so I was able to have the birth I wanted, despite the change of plans. Thank you for everything, Katie. I can't imagine how I could have done this without you! "

"Katie was a wonderful part of our pregnancy and birth journey. We warmed to her straight away over the phone and knew we were in good hands. As well as being so easy to get along with, we were particularly drawn to her because of her extensive experience navigating London hospitals and their procedures, because we wanted as natural a birth as possible and did not want to be pushed down a route of unnecessary interventions. In early labour, we felt very supported as we were constantly on the phone to Katie discussing progress and when to go in and how to cope with the mounting surges - so useful for first-time parents who had never experienced this. It turned out that I did want some interventions in the end myself, e.g. an epidural, and when the time came Katie was amazing at ensuring I received it as fast as possible and flexing our previous birth preferences. Throughout the long birth, she remained an attentive and calm presence, explaining things more fully than the hospital staff at times and going above and beyond by keeping my mum (who wasn't part of the birth team) updated and calming her down when some complications occurred. Katie also ensured my partner could get some rest, but bless her, she didn't get any! When it came to the pushing stage and I was losing my focus, Katie really helped me stay motivated and find more strength. We feel forever grateful that Katie helped us bring our gorgeous and healthy baby daughter Zae into the world."
Ece - SW16
"Katie is an absolute angel, and we really couldn’t have imagined a better birth experience without her. Katie is very knowledgeable, caring and the warmest doula you can find. From the initial preparations to the actual birth, Katie has been invaluable throughout with all her advice and expertise. She is very reliable, responsive and always there when needed. Having Katie at the hospital was a total game changer, from the first time she arrived, the atmosphere changed significantly, and she made us feel calm, relaxed and comfortable. She also knows when to speak up when needed, which was very important. I highly recommend Katie as a doula, and I hope I can have her with our baby no 2 (which we did)! Katie, thank you for being so amazing and loving. Without you, our experience wouldn’t have been the same."

"From the first time I talked to Katie on the phone, I just knew she would be the best support during the birth of our first child. Katie can give you a virtual hug with her warm voice and funny humour. She is just the warmest and most caring person from the moment you meet her. When she left after our first visit, my partner said: “ I feel so much more relaxed about everything now”. We are both Danish and have no family in London, so we wanted to find a doula who was experienced and confident with the hospitals in London. Katie was an amazing advocate throughout the whole labour and knew exactly what I needed through every stage. Katie was also a very big support for my partner, who felt a bit “lost” during some moments. Thank you, Katie, for giving me the birth I have always wanted, a natural birth, with just gas and air (which you told the midwife to give me at the exact time I needed it!) Without you, we would definitely not have had this amazing, magical experience. I highly recommend Katie if you need an amazing warm doula, who also knows how to speak up when needed!"
Nina - SW10
"Having Katie as part of our birth was the best decision we could have made! From our initial chat on the phone, I knew she would be an incredible birth partner and support. Katie brought such warmth, honesty and humour to the whole process, educating, uplifting and advocating for my partner and I from the start. During the labour itself, Katie was an invaluable support; she was a reassuring and compassionate force who guided us through every stage wonderfully, providing my partner with respite and calm, while giving me power and patience! We absolutely would not have had the positive birth experience we did if it weren’t for her."
Carys - SE1

“I had been interested in having a doula, and as soon as I spoke to Katie, I knew she was right for us. We had a long chat, and her warmth and pragmatism really struck me. David and I felt sure that she would be able to navigate the hospital system and be our advocate, and she totally delivered on the day. The antenatal classes beforehand were great for asking questions and getting to know each other. Katie also looked after drawing up a simple birth preferences document. Her loan of the Tens Machine and DVDs was really helpful, and her contacts with osteopaths and a breastfeeding lactation specialist were brilliantly practical. On the big day, Katie provided much-needed reassurance as I went into labour, helped us get to the hospital at just the right time, and supported my husband and I through the experience, giving encouragement and distractions at just the right moments! Post birth, Katie stayed with us until we were settled in a room and baby Luca had latched on. Her support, practical and emotional, was invaluable to us all, and I would so recommend her to couples thinking of having a doula. Just do it!!"
Rachel - SW17
"I know I have thanked you in person, Katie, but I wanted to convey my gratitude to you once more for all the wonderful support you gave me throughout my labour and birth, as well as the many hours you spent with me preparing me for what was to come over video Zoom calls. Being my first pregnancy, I held a lot of fear around anticipating the childbirth experience and on top of that in times of Covid lockdown. After our first session, I realised that you were right for me and I felt really comfortable with you. You put my mind at ease, supporting me in my birth decisions and giving me unbiased advice when I needed it most. When my labour finally came, you were there with me every step of the way in what seemed like a blur since I was in so much pain, but in all that haze I knew I had you by my side. Katie was my rock, providing me with the emotional and physical comfort that I needed during labour, and she was advocating for me throughout the labour process. My labour took around 30 hours, and after what seemed like forever, my little baby girl was born by an emergency C-section. Katie is a wonderful and warm person, an amazing doula, and I highly recommend her!"
Anna - BR1

Katie is a godsend, and you should hire her if you want a down-to-earth, loving supporter! My husband and I recently moved to the UK, and she helped me navigate the NHS system and be an advocate for the level of care I needed. She also empowered my husband to feel confident in the birth and postpartum process. Katie is like a bonus mom who I could rely on and coach me through every step of the way. Katie is VERY plugged in with the resources and is always thinking through what you will need before and after birth. She lined up a lactation consultant to come to my house the day after I got home from the hospital, and that was very helpful with my breastfeeding journey. I can't recommend Katie enough and consider her part of our family now."
Courtney - SW4
"We are so grateful we found Katie, and she was able to be a part of the birth of our baby Charlotte. From the first time I chatted to Katie on the phone, I loved her down-to-earth manner and sense of humour. Katie was great helping me and my husband in the run up to the birth, preparing us for what would happen at the hospital and what we could do to get ahead of the game. Her antenatal sessions were very well prepared, but she was flexible to cover areas that we wanted to focus on - and her birth plan advice was invaluable, including so many hints and tips. For the labour, Katie was brilliant, and I don't think we would have had such a positive birth experience if we had not had Katie with us. Due to some complications, I ended up having an emergency c section, but Katie supported us the whole way, ensuring we arrived at hospital in time (not too late, or too early), helped us make difficult decisions when we were told we couldn't be in the birth centre, but had to move to the labour ward, helped secure a room in the labour ward, and all the time while rubbing my back during surges! She made sure my husband felt supported, so he could feel confident as a first-time birth partner. The support on the phone during early labour and her time at home with us before going into hospital was key, and it would have been a much more stressful experience without her hands-on support (especially for my husband who was having to work through supporting me, dealing with meconium issues and speaking to midwives!) With Katie's support, we were able to ask questions of the medical team and felt we made informed decisions along the way and went into the emergency C-section feeling supported and calm. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Katie and have booked her for our second! To us, it makes absolute sense to have an experienced doula like Katie at such an important event in our lives (after all, my husband and I were both first timers)."
Haylie - SW2

“Engaging Katie as our doula was one of the best decisions that we made during my pregnancy. Katie is experienced and knowledgeable, and her warm, understanding nature helped to calm our first-time parenting jitters. Leading up to the birth date, Katie provided us with lots of information and advice, staying in constant contact in the weeks leading up to my due date. She even rushed over in the middle of the night for a false alarm. However, it was at the hospital that the real magic began. Katie, a true diplomat, was a great favourite among the midwives and instrumental in helping us stick to the birth plan, even amidst pressure for a number of interventions. Meanwhile, Katie took care of every detail so my husband and I could focus on having a baby. She also massaged, soothed and gently coached me during an 18-hour medication-free birth, allowing my husband to sleep for a few hours. A few days later, when our daughter had a scary blue episode that sent us back into the hospital for another week, Katie was with us in a flash to lend her support. We now count Katie as a trusted friend and will not hesitate to employ her services the next time around.”
Margaret - SW1
“Heavily pregnant with a few weeks left in my 2nd pregnancy, I found myself needing a doula. I will be eternally grateful that my Google search led me to Katie. Before meeting Katie, I had held reservations about how it would be having someone I didn’t know with me during such an intense and emotionally charged situation. My first birth had been traumatic and had left me with a fear of giving birth. As a second timer, I was sure that I didn’t need advice surrounding the actual labour/ birth, just someone to be a voice for me whilst I was in the throes of labour. I was wrong. Katie was able to offer me such invaluable advice and was spot on! I believe she made my experience so much smoother and less stressful. My son decided to arrive 10 days early in the early hours on New Year’s Day! Before arriving at the hospital, Katie was immediately there for me and even arrived at the hospital before I got there! She was nothing short of amazing, helping me to walk when I found that I couldn’t. The birth was very intense, and thanks to Katie’s brilliant preparation prior to this date I had the constant feeling that all was going to be ok. My biggest fear had been that I would need to give birth without any pain relief. Typically, due to the speed of labour, it resulted in that having to happen. But because of Katie, I could do what was needed of me in that intense, and for me, scary moment. She was my voice when I couldn’t find the right words. She gave me the courage I needed, and had a calming effect on the whole atmosphere in the room. I had to have my placenta removed in theatre, and where it would usually have stressed me out, having to leave my baby, I did not have any cause to be worried, as during that time Katie gave my son cuddles and warmth in my absence. For what could have been another traumatic birth story due to the labour itself, I can honestly say that Katie’s influence turned it into a beautiful experience for me that I will be able to treasure.”
Fiona - East Dulwich

"The best decision I ever made was to have Katie as my doula. I have always had a fear of giving birth, and from our very first meeting with Katie, who was so empathetic and supportive, that we instantly connected. I knew right then she was the perfect person for me and my husband. My labour had it's complications and therefore I didn't get to have the natural birth I had hoped for, but with Katie by my side, she made me feel in control of what was going on, well informed, supported and relaxed that without her I honestly don't know how I would have got through it. If you are thinking of hiring a doula, I can 100% recommend Katie. And from my sincere heart to you Katie, thank you for being my rock and superstar throughout the day and night I was in the hospital, being by my side and never leaving it. You managed to turn around what could have been a very traumatic experience into a positive one filled with lovely chats and even some laughs, though the difficult patches. I am forever grateful."
Yaz - SW17
"With the endless conflicting advice out there of what to do, what not to do - pre and post birth - it was such a relief to have found a doula like Katie, that we could trust implicitly, and that was super friendly, without being overbearing. She was at the ready at a moment's notice and faded into the background during those special moments without the need to be asked. My husband had been reluctant for us to get a doula, but will now not stop ranting and raving about Katie and how she provided invaluable additional hands of support on the run up and during the birth. During the birth, surprises did arise, and Katie was there to ensure that we were always medically informed, and she was a constant calming and reassuring presence to both of us. Katie - you're a star, and you helped make our special occasion even more special. We can't thank you enough."
